Got Earthworms? Turning Worms Into Teachers at INIC Preschool & Daycare
What if we told you that this summer, your child’s teacher could be… a worm? At INIC, we believe there are no limits to learning. At our south Austin campus, we’re diving into naturalistic intelligence through an exciting hands-on vermicomposting project.
With the help of our friendly earthworms, children will explore soil, nutrients, organic decomposition, and life cycles—all within the walls of our Indoor Wonder Lab. This experience brings science to life in a way that’s sensory-rich, engaging, and deeply rooted in curiosity.
Safe, Sensory, and Age-Appropriate for Preschoolers
Earthworms are completely safe and gentle. Interacting with them gives children the opportunity to strengthen hygiene routines while learning about the living ecosystems we share. It’s a meaningful way to teach care, respect, and responsibility.
What ages will participate?
Children ages 3 and up will participate in hands-on composting activities. Our younger students will also be included in age-appropriate ways, observing the process and engaging through storytelling and guided exploration that builds early scientific awareness.
Curriculum Connections: STEM, Nature, and Social-Emotional Growth
This vermicomposting project supports many areas of INIC Preschool & Daycare Brain-Based Curriculum:
Science & Discovery: Children observe, measure, and document changes over time
Math Skills: Sorting, counting worms, and tracking changes
Sensory Learning: Feeling different textures (soil, water, compost)
Social-Emotional Skills: Practicing patience, responsibility, and environmental stewardship
This work is also part of our Green Garden rehabilitation. Our composting efforts will directly contribute to rebuilding a thriving outdoor garden space. As the children begin to understand that composting and growing take time, they will also be developing key executive functions such as delayed gratification, persistence, and long-term goal setting—skills essential to both academic learning and life beyond the classroom.
Family partnership is always at the core of our curriculum
Learning continues at home so we’d love for families to be part of this journey. Practicing simple, nature-based routines at home—like saving your organic waste—can reinforce your child’s learning. If you’d like to contribute, you’re welcome to send a small bag of fruit or vegetable scraps or coffee grounds (no meat or dairy, please) at the end of each week. These contributions will help feed our worms and fuel meaningful, nature-connected learning.
A Preschool Experience Rooted in Nature and Curiosity
At INIC Preschool & Daycare in Austin and Round Rock, we offer more than a classroom — we offer experiences. Projects like this help children build a foundation in science, responsibility, and care for the earth while engaging their natural sense of wonder.
Come see how INIC is redefining early childhood education with creativity, purpose, and just the right amount of worm power.
