4 Ways INIC Families Make Spanish Immersion Fun at Home
At INIC Preschool, we serve children ages 0-5 with a mission to provide a nurturing and stimulating environment where little scholars can aprender y crecer (learn and grow). Through social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development, we empower young learners with engaging activities, supportive relationships, and an evidence-based curriculum. Our program immerses children in the idioma español (Spanish language) and introduces them to culturas del mundo (world cultures), alongside science, math, reading, writing, and the arts.
Cultural immersion isn’t just about language—it opens doors to a world of opportunities. At our Round Rock and South Austin campuses, students excel in conceptos matemáticos (math concepts), develop strong problem-solving skills, demonstrate mejor autocontrol (better self-control), maintain deep connections with their familias y comunidades (families and communities), and become better overall learners compared to their monolingual peers.
Many parents ask us how they can continue this immersion lifestyle at home. Here are cuatro maneras rápidas (five quick ways) to foster at-home learning and strengthen your child’s Spanish immersion experience:
cuatro maneras rápidas (four quick ways) to Have a spanish Immersion home
1. Books: Libros
Whether children read alone or with a loved one, la lectura (reading) is a powerful tool. It builds vocabulario (vocabulary), gramática (grammar), and other literacy skills, while improving focus, reducing stress, and opening doors to new ideas. Next time you’re choosing a cuento para la hora de dormir (bedtime story), opt for a book in Spanish. Classics like Los Tres Cerditos (The Three Little Pigs) or Caperucita Roja (Little Red Riding Hood) are fun ways to learn and reinforce Spanish words while enjoying familiar stories.
2. Routines: Rutinas
Daily routines are crucial for children to learn the importance of good habits like brushing their teeth (cepillarse los dientes) and getting ready for school (prepararse para la escuela). Incorporate Spanish into these moments by giving simple instructions like "Lávate las manos" (Wash your hands) or "Ponte los zapatos" (Put on your shoes). Over time, your child will associate actions with these phrases and commit them to memory.
3. Labels: Etiquetas
Young learners’ growing minds are limitless, quickly absorbing nuevas palabras (new words). Help them acquire a dual vocabulary by labeling household items in both inglés y español (English and Spanish). For example:
Pantry: Label a box of crackers as galletas saladas.
Bathroom: Label soap as jabón.
Closet: Label shoes as zapatos.
This visual and verbal reinforcement makes everyday interactions an opportunity to learn!
4. Music: Música
La música une a las personas (Music brings people together) and is an amazing way to immerse children in Spanish. During car rides, meal prep, or family dance parties, play songs in Spanish. Try your child’s favorite tunes translated into Spanish or explore fun options like Baila - Baila or Canta - Juego, which are perfect for young learners. Singing along makes it even more memorable!
The Key: Consistency is Clave
When it comes to language learning, la consistencia (consistency) is essential. At INIC Preschool, we provide 100% Spanish immersion, and we love to see our little scholars continue their bilingual journey at home.
